Summer Is Hot

I've looked forward to summer every year for as long as I can remember. This year, however, summer is not much different from the rest of my year. I still wake up for my 8-5 job every morning and head home tired from a long day of work. And yet it is summer, whether I have a summer holiday or not. As an ode to summer, and an attempt to get back in the habit of blogging, I am beginning a summer series entitled, "Summer Is." I'll begin with a fairly obvious one.

Summer is Hot.

The heat started early this year, as we broke 100 way back in April. That's not so fun, and neither is the 107 we reached on Tuesday. Or 104 yesterday. Or today when we reached 100. Or ... well, you get the idea.

But there's something nice about walking out into the blazing sun from an air conditioned building. The sun hits my skin and for a few moments I soak in the rays. I enjoy the heat. It tells me it's summer and urges me to find a pool and go for a swim.

Ninety seconds later, I'm headed back for the AC. And this is the best part of the heat - going back indoors. That blast of cold air hits me as it gusts through the door and I am instantly refreshed.

Summer is hot, and I really wouldn't have it any other way.

Okay, so clearly this picture is not from this summer. Nor was it taken in Abilene. It is, however, a picture of the blazing hot sun in Egypt.

Museum Studies

14 months. That's a long stretch between posts. To be completely honest, not a lot has happened in those months that has been worth blogging about. But I'm back! For the three of you who kept up with my blog, you should get excited. I plan to blog much more consistently, beginning now. Or at least beginning soon.

I'm leaving Abilene, so this space will once again allow people to keep up with me from afar. Well, I'll be in Waco, so I suppose that's not really afar.

I think anybody reading this already knows that I'm headed to Baylor this fall to begin work on my Master's degree in Museum Studies. I took this past year to try and sort out what I want to do for the rest of my life and most of you weren't surprised when I settled on a career in museums.

On my thirteenth birthday, I chose to visit the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, in lieu of having a birthday party. One might wonder why a young girl would make such a choice, but for me it was not a difficult one. In museums, history, art, and culture come alive and speak to me in exciting ways. I can become one with the past through the retelling of stories that would remain silent, if not for the rare artifacts, carefully collected, painstakingly conserved, and artfully interpreted.

In about two months I'll begin my next adventure - learning more about the wonderful world of museums! And maybe one day I'll work in one of these.
